Unveiling the Colibri Gallery: An Inviting Atmosphere for Fine Art and Workshops

by | Sep 20, 2023

Established in 2020, Colibri Gallery has breathed new life into the Morgan Hill art scene with its carefully curated selection of fine art, inviting atmosphere, and workshops taught by esteemed artists. Featuring acrylic and oil paintings, photography, prints, ceramics, and jewelry from local and regional artists, as well as a frame design component, Colibri Gallery is the destination for discovering unique works of art in the Bay Area. Along with their Grand Opening celebration taking place this August, they are actively promoting events like Plein Air Paint Out and Morgan Hill Open Studios for the public to explore the creative diversity of the area.

Morgan Hill’s Hidden Gem

Colibri Gallery is a gem in the Morgan Hill art scene, bringing together a carefully curated selection of fine art, an inviting atmosphere, and workshops led by renowned local and regional artists. It has undergone some transformations since its beginnings as Colibri Art & Framing, where custom framing and design were offered. In 2020, Colibri added the gallery component to its downtown space, providing both frame design services and exhibiting fine art. The actual framing work took place at their workshop south of town, but customer service was handled downtown.

Last August, the two locations were now under one roof and the Grand Opening of Colibri Gallery was set for Tuesday, August 30th through Saturday, September 3rd, 2022 at Caputo Drive. Visitors will find a bright interior and displays that allow colorful 2D and 3D works of art to pop. Acrylic and oil paintings, photography, prints, ceramics, and jewelry from local and regional artists can be found within the space – including the line “Bad Habits” from jewelry maker Morgan Hill. Proudly showcasing the best of Bay Area artwork, Colibri Gallery is the perfect place to explore and appreciate the creative diversity around us.

Advocating Local Art

Colibri Gallery, helmed by Director Ellie Honl and Assistant/Curator Brie Pena, has invigorated the Morgan Hill art community with its seasonal gallery receptions, providing opportunities for fans and those curious about art to engage with the artists. The gallery is also an advocate for the local art community and a supportive partner for public art events like the Plein Air Paint Out and Morgan Hill Open Studios, which have seen successful launches and enthusiastic participation this fall. Additionally, the gallery offers workshops taught by esteemed artists of unique mediums such as botanical cyanotype and hand block printing, offering viewers exposure to new and different forms of art. Most recently on display is “Bad Habits” jewelry by artist Morgan Hill Creative – come check it out!

Now, the McCrainies are ready to take their mission of promoting the arts and culture experience in Morgan Hill to a new level with their upcoming project, the Edes Building. This two-story, mixed-use art gallery, wine bar, and cafe is sure to add to the vibrant downtown atmosphere and be an exciting addition to the Morgan Hill art scene.

KTGY’s rendering of the Edes Building is a promising sign that this project is sure to be a success. Colibri Gallery looks forward to the future of the Morgan Hill art community.

Museum Hours

Colibri Art and Framing is open for business Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Colibri Gallery has been a great addition to the Morgan Hill art scene. Last August, with both its location and studio under one roof, it set out to make an even bigger impact on the appreciation of local and regional artwork. Those who visit the warm and inviting space will find an incredible variety of art, from paintings, photographs, prints, and ceramics to designs created from recycled materials or handmade jewelry. Offering opportunities to both fans of the work as well as those new to art, Colibri hopes to serve as both an advocate for the local artists and their admirers. From gallery receptions to workshops by renowned artists, there are plenty of reasons why the Grand Opening of this exciting venture should be a day not to miss.
